Gearbox Design Project

In this Design Project, my team and I were given the task of designing a gearbox which would transmit power from an electric motor to drive the twin horizontal mixing screws of a large mixer for the production of polyethylene.

The gearbox had to meet several constraints, the output had to achieve a specific rpm, there was a size constraint, service life had to be adequate etc. Besides these, many other engineering calculations and decisions were made to make the gearbox as efficient as possible, taking into account factors such as bending stresses, thermal issues, vibrations etc.

A scaled model was assembled with 3D printed gears and shafts, and a laser-cut acrylic housing. This acted as a form of visualisation for our "client" during our final presentation.
