Improving Student Spaces

This was a University project done with the mentorship of several NEC employees. In order to determine the best approach to tackle "Improving Student Spaces", my team and I placed a large emphasis on research & surveys, seeing what other universities are doing and getting the opinions of current students. With all the gathered data, we came to a conclusion to focus on improving the visibility of study spaces.

Our proposal was to develop a simple to use phone app which would have a map of the university with each building colour coded to display the capacity of spaces available, which would be updated in real-time. During our meetings at NEC, we were introduced to software that can recognise and count the number of people on a camera feed. Hence, by placing cameras in study spaces around uni, the information can be easily processed and displayed on the app for students to see.

Although this app was never developed, the University of Melbourne has since implemented a similar solution, where the information of capacity is displayed on a screen outside buildings with study spaces.
